Production Notes:
William Hartnell went on to play the first Dr Who.
Although Bob Monkhouse was an established stand-up comedian, he is best remembered in later life for being the premier gameshow host, presenting The Golden Shot, Family Fortunes and Bob’s Full house amongst others.
Shirley Eaton is the only actor with more than 1 Carry On credit who is still alive. Shirley is better known for being the woman painted gold in James Bond’s Goldfinger.
Bill Owen appeared in 4 of the early Carry On’s but he was more famous for the part of Compo in Last of the Summer Wine.
Hattie Jacques’ character in this Carry On was a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corp so this could be regarded as her first ‘Matron’ role.
If you have ever seen the film Stripes starring Bill Murray and Harold Ramis, you will notice that the plot was very similar to Carry On Sergeant.

Notes:
Jill Ireland the wife of David McCallum and later Charles Bronson, had a supporting role.
Other notable actors who had supporting roles included Wilfred Hyde-White who played The Colonel and Irene Handel who played the wife of Bill Owen’s character Percy Hickson.
Another Hickson, this time Joan Hickson played the part of Sister. This was to be the first of 5 appearances in a Carry On supporting role. Joan Hickson went on to play Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple on TV.
Although he was uncredited and only his feet were shown, Carry On Nurse was technically the first of the series for Bernard Bresslaw.

Production Notes:
Radio’s Ray’s A Laugh star Ted Ray made his only Carry On appearence in this film. He was due to appear in the next Carry On but his contract prevented him from doing so. He was replaced by Sid James who went on to become a Carry On regular.
It was this Carry On where Leslie Phillips first said what turned out to be his catchphrase that stuck with him for the rest of his life. After being introduced to Joan Sims’ character Miss Allcock, Phillips remarked ‘Ding Dong’.
One of the pupils was played by a young Richard O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan went on to star in a number of TV sit coms including Man About the House & Robin’s Nest. He suffered a stoke in 2003 and now resides in the actors retirement home Brinsworth House.

This was Sid James’ Carry On debut. Only made possible by Ted Ray’s contract preventing him from performing.
This was Shirley Eaton’s last Carry On and Leslie Phillips’ last one until appearing in Carry On Columbus 32 years later.
Joan Hickson made her 2nd appearance of 5 in a supporting role.

Joan Hickson’s 3rd of 5 appearences had her in a role reversal with Hattie Jacques. This time she played Matron whilst Hattie played Sister.
Fenella Fielding’s role was a supporting one but she had a lead role in Carry On Screaming.
The man who was famous from his mixed up way of talking, Stanley Unwin played the part of the landlord. This was to be his only Carry On.
Other notable supporting actors were Patrick Cargill(Father Dear Father), Molly Weir(Dr Finlay’s Casebook), Nicholas Parsons(Just A Minute amongst many more) and Terence Alexander(Bergerac).
Location scenes were shot in Windsor.

Only 3 of the regulars(Sid James, Kenneth Williams and Kenneth Connor) appeared in this Carry On.
Joan Sims was taken ill just before filming was to take place. Her role was taken by Dilys Laye who went on to appear in 3 further Carry On’s.
Charles Hawtrey had demanded star billing and was subsequently dropped from the production only to return for the next one. His part of the Chef was taken by Lance Percival.
Anton Rodgers(Fresh Fields, May to December) had a supporting role.
Location scenes were shot at Tilbury Docks.
